Method and measuring system for detecting and localizing misalignments of idlers in belt conveyor systems
Duration: 01.04.2021 bis 05.05.2022

Method for determining and localizing misalignments of idlers of an idler station in belt conveyor systems, wherein a mobile measuring system according to one of the claims is used for determining and localizing the misalignments of the idlers, wherein the number of pressure sensors is detachably applied in a line and at a height across the belt width on the underside of the conveyor belt without damaging the conveyor belt, and the number of pressure sensors corresponds at least to the number of idlers of an idler station to be measured, wherein the pressure sensors detect the contact pressure in contact with the idler when an idler of an idler station overruns and the alignment of the idlers is determined on the basis of a characteristic pressure point pattern resulting therefrom.

Analysis and simulation of the influence of the conveyed material on the belt misalignment of belt conveyor systems
Duration: 01.01.2020 bis 31.12.2021

The aim of the theoretical and experimental research of this thesis is to analyze and simulate the influence of the conveyed material on the belt misalignment of belt conveyor systems. With the help of the simulation model to be developed, it should be possible to extend the existing model for the simulation of belt misalignment, which takes into account the alignment of the idlers, or to develop a new model. In the future, this can significantly improve the design of steering devices as well as the determination of the necessary number of such devices and their placement in belt conveyor systems. This can greatly reduce one of the main causes of failure in belt conveyors.

The belt conveyor test conveyor system of the Institute of Logistics and Material Flow Technology is available for analyzing the influences and validating the model to be developed (Figure 4). This is a system consisting of a 15 meter long horizontal test conveyor and a return conveyor as well as a hopper and a transfer chute. The system enables the conveying of bulk material, currently washed gravel. There is a device on the hopper to manipulate the feed of the bulk material with regard to centric discharge onto the test conveyor. The lateral deflection of the conveyor belt can be determined using an optical measuring system already fitted to the system. However, the extent to which the number of measuring points is sufficient must be checked here.
In order to be able to determine the loads on the belt as a result of the eccentric bulk material feed, DEM simulations are carried out analogous to the tests, the results of which are used as input data for the simulation model to predict belt misalignment.
